Student Report:

Dear IANA Officers and Members:

The University of Iowa SRNA Class of 2007 would like to recognize your overwhelming support in both the educational and political arenas throughout this academic year. Additionally, we would like to express appreciation for the pizza party and for funding our hotel rooms during the IANA Spring Conference. Whether intentional or not, this IANA Spring Conference was a great review before entering the operating room this summer.

On Friday, April 8th our class first heard from three University of Iowa SRNA senior students. The topics ranged from Interventional NeuroRadiology and Anesthetic Implications of Antineoplastic Drugs, to Issues Concerning Informed Consent-Legal, Ethical, & JACHO. Discussion following the informed consent lecture was particularly insightful, as practicing CRNAs across the state volunteered concerns or changes within their individual practices. Later in the afternoon we heard lectures on Post-Discharge Nausea and Vomiting in addition to a lecture dedicated to Anesthetic Considerations for the Elderly Patient.

Saturday, CRNA Mark Kossick lectured on the 12-Lead EKG, cardiac ischemia, modified chest leads, and derived 12-lead EKG. He followed with practice 12-lead rhythm strips. Both the presentation of information and the information itself were absolutely wonderful. Thanks to the vendors, we were able to have hands-on experience, learning how to set the isoelectric line; J-point; ST reference; frequency bandwidth; and gain on real anesthesia machines. A HUGE thanks to everyone for rescheduling our student breakout session so that we could hear the entire heart lecture. In the afternoon, we learned about Health Economics and Medicare billing concerning CRNA practice. Two additional lectures focused on Anaphylactoid vs Anaphylactic Reactions under Anesthesia and the Recognition & Management of Aspiration. We could not have asked for a better review!!

Sunday we cultivated our political knowledge and expertise. Topics included: the ARNP Compact, Health Insurance for the Next Decade, and Iowa’s Healthcare for the future from the Government’s perspective. Finally we heard a compelling speech by Bill Miller, CRNA on Healthcare and Politics. A special thank you to Bill for extending your time, patience, and political expertise to our SRNA class of 2007.

Once again, the Spring IANA Conference was a very pleasurable educational experience. Our class has enjoyed the opportunity to network with other students and practicing CRNAs. Thank you for inviting us and making us feel welcome!

Sincerely,

University of Iowa, SRNA Class of 2007
